The Redhill Club Relaunch

The 50+ Skills Exchange Club brings people together to socialise and learn new skills. It also supports individuals who are wishing to get back into work or pursue volunteering opportunities in the local community.

Following the success of The 50+ Skills Exchange Club Redhill Pilot, we are thrilled to announce that we will be relaunching The Club at the Harlequin on 1st October, as part of Older Peoples Day.  The 50+ Skills Exchange Club already runs successfully in Crawley. There are also plans to launch The Club in Reigate and Horsham in 2016.

Beta Futures’ Managing Director, Marie Harris, will be embarking upon a 50km trek of the Great Wall of China over 5 days in October 2015. So far Marie has raised over £2800 in aid of this amazing charity and The Club members are hoping to arrange a trip to the hospice in the near future. There are also plans for a Christmas lunch with all of The 50+ Skills Exchange Club members.

Beta Futures is relaunching The Redhill Club to encourage new people to join which will help The Club to grow and develop. This will include a committee, made up of members, being set up to drive and shape The Club.

Our MD is taking on the Great Wall of China for Chestnut Tree House

Marie Chestnut Tree House 1Beta Futures’ Managing Director, Marie Harris, will be embarking upon a 50km trek of the Great Wall of China over 5 days in October 2015; raising money for Chestnut Tree House.

Chestnut Tree House is the only children’s hospice in East and West Sussex and cares for 300 children and young adults from 0-19 years of age with progressive life-limiting conditions from Sussex and South East Hampshire.

There are potentially 1,000 families with life-limited children in Sussex. Chestnut Tree House offers support for the whole family including psychological and bereavement support, end of life and short break care and sibling support.

It currently costs well over £3m each year to provide all the care services provided by Chestnut Tree House. Families are never charged for their care and less than 8p in every pound is funded by the government, so we rely heavily on the generosity, help and support of the people of Sussex.” (Chestnut Tree House, 2015)

So far Marie has raised over £2,800  in aid of this amazing charity and is currently training hard to get ready for the challenge.

We recently had a talk given by a representative from Chestnut Tree House at our 50+ Skills Exchange Club Crawley. The Club members were very touched and inspired by the hospice. We have arranged a trip to the House for Club members in October.Marie says I am raising money for Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice because it is vital that the amazing work of the hospice continues. I have never done anything like this before so it certainly will be a challenge.”

Meet Molly, our Marketing and PR Intern

In June 2015, Beta Futures welcomed Molly Aldrich – Wincer, a BSc Business Management & Marketing student from the University of Sussex, to the team. Today we will learn more about Molly, the work she’s been doing and the importance of internships for young people.

“I first applied for the position as I am very interested in businesses that have a social cause at the heart of the work that they do. Beta Futures therefore became very appealing to me. As a social enterprise that is passionate about reducing the exclusion of older people in their local communities and society as a whole, I was really keen to learn more and see how I could get on board.

As part of my degree I am required to do a placement year and I was motivated to fill this period with as much experience as possible. I already had experience as a Marketing Assistant within a solicitors firm in Brighton as well as working with various projects within the third sector. This meant I felt confident that I would be able to make a positive difference at the company. I originally applied to work with Beta Futures for a 10 week Marketing & PR internship. Examples of my work so far include developing the business’s marketing strategy, copy writing marketing materials, running Beta Futures’ social media platforms and supporting the team with the running of the 50+ Skills Exchange Club.

The company have offered me a new role that starts in September, involving business development, sales and part supervising the new apprentice. Beta Futures is barely 2 years old and is growing at an impressive rate. This growth has included moving into a bigger office space and employing new staff – which has been really interesting for me to witness and be a part of.

Beta Futures specialises in identifying funding opportunities, writing bids and supporting SMEs’ growth and resourcing for their business. The money generated from these services allow them to run The Club. The 50+ Skills Exchange Club is a community initiative that is a meeting of like-minded people who have a wealth of skills, knowledge and experience which they are willing to pass on to others. In many ways I feel as if I am getting the best of both worlds. Working on something that I am passionate about and also learning more about business management in a practical setting.

My placement year ensures that I will graduate armed with experience that will allow me to pursue my career goals. Everybody knows that young people need experience. But unfortunately, you need experience to get a job and you need a job to gain experience – the vicious cycle that is all too familiar for many youngsters. Organisations that invest in interns are very likely to see real rewards and if they select the right candidate, they may end up staying! It is a long term investment and the benefits may not be immediate, but they will become apparent to the company and the intern in due course. As long as both parties are willing to put in the time and hard work that is required.

My work with Beta Futures is an invaluable opportunity for me and will give me the chance to apply theory that I have learnt from my degree so far and develop my own skillset and experience further.  I am really excited to tackle this new challenge and more importantly I am pleased that I don’t have to leave yet!”

Meet Mike Monk

On 10th September 2015, Beta Futures will be launching our brand new Master Classes.

We thought this week’s blog would be a great opportunity to learn more about Mike Monk, our Sales and Marketing Consultant, from Monk Franchising  who will be running some of the classes.

M Monk profile pictureMike started his career in sales and marketing 38 years ago. He feels that the buzz from securing new business never fades. Aged 15 he knew that he wanted to go into sales. At this young age he worked in an office equipment showroom every Saturday in Brighton.  On his second Saturday he had sold two machines, this confirmed his love of sales and that he was in fact “pretty good at it.”

He then entered the fashion and clothing market, working as an agent for 4 companies in London for 4 years. This lead to Mike being head hunted for a printed T-shirt company. He decided to become an agent as he wasn’t sure about this path. Within a year he became a Sales Director and within 5 years took the company’s turnover from £200k to £6 million, also expanding into Germany, France, Holland and Greece.

Mike then moved to a sourcing company, winning a well-known Golf Competition contract worth 6 figures.

After 2 years with this company, Mike decided to start up his own business. Unfortunately this company failed – the lessons learnt from this were invaluable. “The timing was wrong. It taught me to never completely rely on the banks and that overheads must always be kept under control. Cash flow is critically important too.” The best piece of business advice Mike had ever received (from a multimillionaire) was; “Turnover is vanity, profit is sanity”.

Mike then set up Monk Marketing, 12 years ago, and went on to franchise this a few years later. Monk Marketing works with clients such as Intercontinental Hotels and Costain Construction and recently secured a contract with Intercontinental New York through recommendation from the London hotel.

Mike’s advice to others is that if you’re in business working for yourself, you should enjoy it.

In his spare time he enjoys golf, tennis and soccer. He also likes to go out to eat and socialising, as well as having a BBQ in the sunshine. But most importantly he loves to spend time with his family and claims that his biggest life achievement was having his first child.

Beta Futures is excited to be working with Mike and is looking forward to launching the new Master Classes. Mike is hoping that attendees of the classes will leave the sessions feeling energised and will have gained a new insight into how they can run their business.

Networking

Giving, contributing to and supporting others without keeping score” – Watson

From a business perspective networking can be extremely powerful. If you meet the right person it can have a huge impact on the growth and development of your business. Networking is all about making connections with the right people and building mutually beneficial relationships – we all know that, right?

The misconception about networking is that it is a game and a quick transaction between two people. Networking however, should be about knowing that what you can achieve with others is better than what you can do alone.

There are no short cuts to building sustainable relationships with others. You have to build rapport, trust and commitment, much like any other relationship.

It is easy to engage in your own private pre-screening process and to decide exactly who you want to talk to before even getting to an event. One thing that you must realise is that you need be open to talking to anyone and everyone. You never know who you may end up talking to.

Reciprocity is also very important. You need to think about what you can offer someone. Is it advice, contacts, a business partnership or something else? There needs to be a balance of accepting support, favours, information and making sure you can contribute in equal measure.

Be prepared to talk, listen and put the time in when networking. This will give you the best chance of reaping the rewards that we all know networking can offer.

Watch out for our next blog which will be coming out in the next few weeks.

Beta Futures is excited to announce that we will be hosting our very own networking event in September 2015 to launch our brand new “Master Classes” in conjunction with Mike Monk, Founder of Monk Marketing.

  • Sales & MarketingMM LOGO
  • Franchising Your Business
